This free resource began with a
question: "Can hospitals more effectively measure and
communicate the return on the charitable investments they make in
their communities?"
The answer is yes.
Hospitals can earn a "return on invested giving" by
focusing on impact and communicating the achievements of their
charitable service in ways that gain major donor and community
support.
How?
Our findings suggest outcomes are the most effective
metric in communicating a hospital's charitable impact on its
community. Yet, many hospitals continue to tout their general
activities, rather than specific achievements.
Within this booklet are case studies of four hospital
community programs. Each program had a proven track record of
operating a sustainable charitable service. However, since
re-orienting their metrics and reporting to reflect outcomes (not
outputs), they have experienced new momentum and interest in their
work.

We are confident that, by leveraging these
principles, your hospital charitable services can increase the
impact of their stories and earn return on investment through
philanthropic and community support.
